Plane Crash Kills GOP Consultant
Written by Shane D'Aprile on December 20, 2008, 04:43 PM
Michael Connell, a leading Republican Internet consultant, was killed Friday night after the small plane he was piloting crashed in Ohio.

Connell, 45, was attempting to land but went down near a vacant house some two miles short of the Akron-Canton airport runway. Connell was the only person inside his Piper Saratoga. Nobody on the ground was injured.

Connell was the founder and president of New Media Enterprises, an Ohio-based consulting firm, and GovTech Solutions. He was also a partner at Connell Donatelli Inc., a new media firm he headed along with Rebecca Donatelli, who was the lead internet consultant to Sen. John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign.

"He was a real innovator in our field," says Brett Sciotto, president of Ohio-based American Strategies. "It's certainly a sad day for those of us who knew him well and had the pleasure of working with him."

Connell sat on the board of the American Association of Political Consultants, an organization headed by Akron native Angela McMillan. She remembers Connell as a fixture in their Ohio community and at their local church.

"He was so much more than just an innovative Internet guy," McMillan says. "He had a very rich personal life, and he was well-loved and will be missed by the people in this community."

In 2000 and 2004 Connell oversaw President George W. Bush's online outreach. During the 2002 and 2004 cycles he was also the lead online consultant for several GOP campaigns, including those of Sens. Gordon Smith, Lamar Alexander and John Thune. New Media Enterprises has also done extensive work for the Republican National Committee.

This past November Connell was deposed in a lawsuit alleging voting fraud and election irregularities in Ohio in connection with software he had developed. Connell steadfastly denied any wrongdoing.

Connell is survived by his wife and four children.

Today I received Mike Connell's Christmas 2008 newsletter. It has this message: "Enduring is the fact that two thousand years ago, a babe was born in Bethlehem. When our Lord God sent his only Son for our salvation, THAT was an event that changed the course of history. In spite of the current economic and political conditions, salvation is eternal. So, it is important to put our political and philosophical differences aside and really celebrate this season for what it truly represents." Mike was a faith-filled Catholic and a loving husband and father. He was a good friend and was blessed with brillant political talent. He was kind, humble and had a wonderful love of life. Please give Mike, his wife Heather, their children Madison, Austin, Patrick and Lauren the gift of your prayers. Mike closed his Christmas card with this message: "May you all have a very safe and joyous Christmas season and the love of Christ be with you throughout the year. God bless." Yes, God bless...Mike

Sorry to hear about this. As a person who is a pilot and involved with political campaigns my sympathies go out to his family. It is beyond tragic that this happened at all but especially so that it happened at this Christian time of the year. I also have four children and this makes me very sad. Family is so valuable. I worked tangentially with Mr. Connell in the Bush 2000 race. He was unaware of our efforts but we did the calls in Florida for the Presidential in the voice of Jeb Bush.

Brian your comments are simply beautiful. We all know that Mike is now joyfully with the Lord whom he served so well in life but we will miss him so so much. His family and his God were the most important parts of his life. To that end we have set up a scholarship fund to benefit his four beautiful children. Friends of Mike are invited to participate at www.eDonation.com/MikeConnell. Please let others who would like to honor Mike's life know as well. Thank you all.

This world is a lesser place without Mike Connell. He was truly a good friend and a mentor to me. Words cannot begin to express the feelings of sorrow that I have today. My thoughts and prayers go out to Heather and the kids. There isn't much you can say to comfort them other than the fact that Mike's strong faith and works for the needy guarantee eternal rewards. Proverbs 10:2 says "Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death." Mike was an innovator, a loving husband and father, and a dedicated servent of his God. I thank him for his friendship and help along the way. I look forward to seeing him once again. David Bishop

Mike was an extraordinary man. He had it all looks, smarts and such a gracious soul. I am devastated. It is beyond difficult to imagine never seeing him again. My thoughts and prayers go out to Becki and especially his wife and four children. I am so sorry for the pain you must be experiencing at what should be such a joyous time of year. It is my hope that your tears will turn to smiles at the memory of this wonderful man sooner than later. God Bless.

Mike Connell was a pioneer in online politics. I remember him showing me a feature of Jeb Bush's 1998 campaign web site that anticipated the blog. He was always gracious and honest in his dealings with others. A very sad day.

I didn't know Mike, but the loss of anyone dedicated to improving the country, from either side of the aisle, is a sad one. I'm sory to hear about it.

Mike Connell was a tremendous professional and a great man. I am honored that I knew him.

I just came from visiting Heather Connell, Mike's wife, and their four children. Their home was filled with friends, food and a shared loss that is truly heart wrenching. Tears do not belong in the same room with Christmas trees. Most people know Mike as a pioneer in political internet communication. What they didn't know is that he also helped to bring education to children in El Salvador and democracy to rebels in Tibet. He was a wonderful father to his children, a devoted husband to Heather and a caring friend and mentor to many, including me. He will be missed. A scholarship fund is being established for Mike's children. Please visit our website www.theaapc.org for more information.

I wasn't one of the fortunate ones who knew Mike Connell and I am sure that will continue to be my loss. Winning Campaigns sends our sincere condolences to the Connell family. His loss to the political industry will be great, but pale in comparison to the personal loss to his family. May he rest in peace, may God grant his family the strength that they will need to deal with this heartbreaking circumstance.

I got to know Mike when he joined the International Association of Political Consultants (IAPC), and more closely when he was elected Board Member. I liked him instantly, and esteemed him as a person and as a professional. He was a person, whom you can call a good man. We all are going to miss him. My thoughts are with his family. Rest in peace, Mike.

I am very sorry to hear of the loss especially for the family. But I did hear from an unsubstantiated source that his denial of wrongdoing was not so steadfast and it was possible he had information that might have revealed a not so honest election. Does anyone know anything about his testimony or upcoming subpoenas?
