Need help about career options PLEASE

Hey,

I am currently a senior secondary ed major and I am doing my student teaching.

Could I ever do elementary ed or am I strictly stuck in secondary? I ask because I was placed in a 5th and 6th grade school before my student teaching internship year and loved it... but it was too late in the game for me to switch elementary ed and still be able to student teach and graduate on time. Staying later is not an option for me, bc my scholarship only runs 4 years.

I am not sure how it all works and my school is not very detailed on it. I live in MS if that helps.

5th and 6th are middle school in my area...

Most places are that way. But in MS Elem is K-6 and 7-12 is secondary and there aren't any middle grade ed programs at my university.

If you're majoring in secondary ed and aren't willing to stay longer in order to finish an elementary ed major, I think that you're stuck in secondary. In my state you need to have a major (or equivalent coursework) in whatever grade/subject you're planning to teach.

Unless your state allows you to just pass a test to add on endorsements, you will have to take extra classes. They could be masters classes when you are ready for that.

Oh Really? See they do offer an elem Ed masters program but I had heard that I had to have a bachelors in that area to apply. I thought that sounded kinda off.

The school could have that requirement. You'll need to talk to someone at the school to find out.

I recommend that you visit with your advisor. Tell him or her what you want to do and ask what it takes to make that happen.

If you were in California, newgirl09, I'd send you to the nearest county office of education, which wouldn't have a vested interest in getting more money out of you.
