As long as both people have similar expectations about the future of the relationship, moving in together is fine. If they both understand that they will likely get engaged within the year, or if they both understand that living together is just convenient but there's no promise of marriage, then fine. It's when one party expects to get engaged and the other isn't even thinking about that yet that there are issues, and that's where the cow-milk (pig-sausage) analogy comes in. The TV show Bones did this really well a few months ago, and the couple broke up before they actually moved in together.
