Grade 3
Opinion/persuasive writing

Common Core standards require grade 3 students to write a persuasive/opinion piece. Does anyone see these as two different kinds of writing or are they the same?

Opinion paper is when you are stating your opinion about a subject ... But not necessarily taking a particular side. Opinion papers are usually an extension after reading an argumentative article such as... Should kids have homework?

A persuasive paper is def all about convincing someone to do something or think about something in a different way. In both papers you would use facts and details to validate your opinion or support your side of an argument. Can theses papers have both opinion and a persuasive stance? Absolutely. We wrote persuasive pieces by applying for a job for Santa and by trying to convince him that who was the best person for the job of elf or reindeer. The kids had a blast and Santa surely would have hired some of these guys!

They are different. The former will actively work to convince readers to agree with their opinion while an opinion paper is "just sharing". For a persuasive paper, techniques would be taught to help student accomplish their goal. An argument paper is different still and would include a rebuttal.

This is what we have been taught, anyway.
