Doggy dental troubles

So my darling little doggy (a senior boston terrier) has a bad tooth. It's all my fault too; I didn't have any luck trying to get him to let me brush his teeth when I first adopted him four years ago so I just stopped. Now he has to get a tooth extracted. I took him to the vet today, because his bad tooth (that I wasn't aware of until this) just started bleeding! It was so scary. His extraction isn't until the 15th and all I can do for him if it bleeds more is apply pressure and clean out his mouth.

Has anyone else ever had dental surgery for their dog? I am nervous for him. She did a full check up on him and he is otherwise in good health. I just feel so guilty for neglecting his teeth. Never again!

Update:
He had his surgery and turned out perfectly fine! They did a whole dental cleaning as well, so that is a good start to a healthier little doggy mouth.

We haven't had dental surgery on our dogs, but my mom had a cat to the vet for a tooth removal, and I'm sorry to report that the cat did not survive. The vet couldn't explain what happened.

We make sure our dogs have access to Nyla bones. Those seem to work well and our dogs love to chew them. I also brush their teeth even though they hate it.

Sorry, never been in that situation, but I have a Boston too! I try my best to brush his teeth regularly, but every few weeks of brushing turns into every couple mos, etc. I need to stay on track with regular brushings. I also give him those Booda bones to chew on with the bumps to help clean his teeth.

I hope it all goes well!

You need to pick a dog food that is "good" for teeth
My Vet recommends Science Diet and Imas
I use

Small & toy dogs up To 20 lbs. -
No fillers or artificial preservatives -
1+ years; -
Premium dog food -
Vet recommended

Thank you for the reccomendation!

I called the vet and they were actually able to get him in sooner. He's having his surgery this morning! I am anxious, but I am glad we don't have to wait until next week to get it taken care of.
